Man charged with manslaughter over Wakefield dog bite death

A man has been charged with manslaughter after a person was killed by a German Shepherd on a footpath in Wakefield.

Emergency services were called to reports of an altercation on the old trainline footpath off Blacker Lane at around 1.30pm on Saturday.

The 55-year-old victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died shortly after 7pm.

Lee Ellis, 55, is due to appear in court on Tuesday charged with being the owner of a dog dangerously out of control and manslaughter following the incident.

A German Shepherd dog seized as part of this investigation continues to be held in police kennels, the West Yorkshire Police said.

Over the weekend, the walking path was sealed off by police tape with police cars remaining at the remote former railway track.

The family of the 55-year-old man who died are being supported by specially trained officers.

Ellis, of Blacker Lane, Wakefield, has been remanded into custody to appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court.
