Kota Kinabalu: A 22-year-old man was fined RM10,000, or three years' jail in default, by the Sessions Court on Tuesday for directly dealing with unlawful transactions involving RM22,800 through his own bank account.
Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan imposed the sentence after Mazlan Wong Han Bang pleaded guilty to committing the offence at the Ace Delights Food Court in Kampung Nagapas, Papar, between 1.31pm and 3.47pm on March 15, 2025.
The offence, under Section 424C(1) of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of between three and 10 years, a fine of between RM10,000 and RM150,000, or both, upon conviction.
The court heard that the victim received a WhatsApp message from a man claiming to be "Rayner" from the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry seeking catering services before persuading the victim to sponsor bird's nests purchased from another individual named Gerry, prompting four transfers totalling RM22,800 into Wong's bank account before the suspect cut off contact.
Investigations found Wong had provided his bank account details and ATM card to a third party, with Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Shafeerah Mad Iskim prosecuting while Azizah Saleh represented the accused.
