Kota Kinabalu: A 33-year-old man was fined a total of RM9,500 by the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to two counts of handling stolen property.
Mohd Azhar Raini pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to both charges.
On the first count, Azhar was fined RM4,500 or sentenced to 12 months’ jail for dishonestly keeping stolen property belonging to Noley Tohoi, including an identity card, driving licence, two bank cards and a watch.
The offence was committed at about 11pm on July 21 this year at a house in Kg Taun Gusi 2, Kota Belud.
The offence under Section 411 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of five years, a fine, or both, on conviction.
The prosecution told the court that the complainant lodged a police report after her belongings went missing on July 18 at about 4.30am while she was asleep in her car at the roadside in Kepayan Kobusak, near here.
Azhar was arrested at Kg Taun Gusi 2, Kota Belud, on July 22, and police recovered the stolen identity card, bank cards, driving licence and watch from him.
For the second charge, Azhar was fined RM5,000 or 12 months’ jail for disposing of a stolen CCTV decoder in a bushy area off the Old Papar-Penampang Road at about 1.30pm on July 30.
The offence under Section 414 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The court heard that a laundrette office in Kg Ramayah, Penampang, was broken into on June 28. Police later arrested Azhar on July 28 and recovered the stolen CCTV decoder which had been disposed of by him.
