
SANDAKAN: A man without identification documents was sentenced by the Sessions Court here to one year and six months’ imprisonment and fined RM50,000 after pleading guilty to possessing 490 turtle eggs from fully protected species.
Judge Roslinda Razali imposed the sentence on Manan Saibung after he admitted to the charge when it was read to him in court on Thursday.
The court heard that the offence was committed at about 5.50pm on June 7 by the roadside in front of a premises here.
Manan was found in possession of 490 turtle eggs belonging to the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) species without valid authorisation.
He was charged under Subsection 41(1) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, while the prosecution was conducted by Sabah Wildlife Department prosecuting officer Primus Lambut, and the court also ordered that he be referred to the Immigration Department for further action after serving his sentence.
