Kota Kinabalu: A 34-year-old man was jailed five months by the Magistrate’s Court for stealing two power banks.

Tong Fui Shiang pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to stealing two Salpido power banks worth RM139.80 belonging to Mohd Firdaus Suhaili at 12.30pm on May 7, in PC Image Store, Kompleks Karamunsing here.

Tong was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and liability of a fine, on conviction.

Prosecuting Officer Inspector Suzie SK told the court that Tong was caught hiding the items in his underwear without making payment.

Tony was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.

In another case, a 56-year-old man was fined RM1,200 or two month’s jail for engaging in online gambling in public.

Chong Kuk Loi admitted to committing the offence before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali at a premises in Taman Suria, Penampang at 4pm on May 3.

He was charged under Section 7 (2) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both, on conviction.

Police also seized a smartphone from Chong during a raid, said Deputy Public Persecutor Ling Ghuong Zin.

Unrepresented, Chong requested leniency as he suffered from a stroke. However, Ling applied for an appropriate sentence.
