A 35-year-old man, who went missing days ago while returning from election campaigning of a BJP candidate in municipal elections in Moga town, was found dead from a vacant plot near a railway overbridge on Kotkapura Road here today.
The deceased has been identified as Amandeep Singh, a resident of Mehme Singh Wala village here.
According to his family, Amandeep had been campaigning for his friend Krishan Saini, who is contesting the municipal election from Ward 15 as a BJP candidate. They claimed that Amandeep left for his village around 7:30 pm on May 21 after the election campaign, but did not reach home.
A report in this regard was lodged with the police, they claimed.
On Sunday, a body was recovered from a vacant plot near the railway overbridge. They reached the spot and identified it as Amandeep. He had two daughters.
The family alleged murder and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.
The police said that a missing person report had already been registered. After the recovery of the body, a case of murder has been registered and investigation is underway.
A team of forensic experts also visited the spot. It is however not clear that how he was murdered.
The police ruled out any political rivalry behind the murder. “As per the preliminary investigation, the deceased first had an argument with a watchman, and later he was found dead," said a senior police officer.
