Tuaran: A 34-year-old man has been reported missing after failing to return from fishing at the Serusup River estuary, last Saturday.
Husaini Saidin was last seen leaving his home at 4.30am on Saturday to go fishing using his boat. His family raised the alarm when he failed to return home by Monday.
Tuaran District Fire and Rescue Chief Mohamad Nor Amit said emergency services received a call from police at 1.19pm on Monday reporting the incident.
A 12-member rescue team were deployed to the scene.
“Upon arrival, our team gathered information and launched a search and rescue operation covering 15 kilometres along the coastal area, assisted by two boats provided by local residents,” Mohamad Nor said.
The victim’s family and villagers had been conducting their own search since morning, discovering only Husaini’s damaged boat and fishing nets washed ashore.
“The boat was found damaged, believed to have been battered by waves, while the fishing nets had drifted to the rocky shoreline due to rough seas,” he said.
The search operation involves collaboration between the Fire and Rescue team, Civil Defence Force, police and the local community.
Operations were suspended at 6pm Monday and resumed on Tuesday.
