DUNGUN – A man sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a wild bear while overseeing his livestock in an oil palm plantation near Kampung Telembuh, Jerangau Sungai, on Thursday.

The victim’s wife, Roshuhaida Mokhtar, 39, described that her husband, Nik Azhar Daud, 40, had been resting under a tree in the plantation around 11am when the attack occurred.

Nik Azhar had gone to the plantation earlier at around 9am to ensure that his livestock didn’t stray onto the nearby East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2).

"While resting, a large black bear suddenly charged from behind, biting his neck. Despite struggling to break free, the bear then clamped onto his arm and leg.

In a desperate attempt to defend himself, Nik Azhar grabbed a machete from his waist and stabbed the bear, causing it to retreat,” she told reporters on Friday.

Roshuhaida, who resides in Kampung Nerang, said her husband sustained injuries to his neck, arm and right leg. He was initially taken to Hulu Terengganu Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu for further care.
