Man United agree deal for £35m Ederson to kick-start midfield rebuild

Manchester United have agreed a £35m fee with Atalanta for Ederson as the midfielder is set to become Michael Carrick’s first buy.

The Brazilian, who could cost a further £4m in add-ons, is expected to sign a four-year deal at Old Trafford.

Ederson only has a year left on his contract at Atalanta, enabling United to get him for a relatively cheap fee.

The 26-year-old will form the first part of United’s midfield overhaul with Carrick set to make at least two signings in the centre of the pitch.

Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni is also a target, along with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, though the latter is likelier to join Manchester City.

United were interested in Carlos Baleba last year, though the Cameroon international then had a difficult year with Brighton, while Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is also on their radar.

Meanwhile, Casemiro’s United career is over, with the Brazilian departing on a free transfer after four years, while there are doubts about the future of Manuel Ugarte and Christian Eriksen, who left in 2025, was never replaced.

Ederson, who has won three caps for Brazil, joined Atalanta in 2022 and has scored 16 times in 180 appearances for the Serie A club, helping them to win the Europa League in 2024.
