MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. flies to India for the 18th BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) Summit, to further amplify the agenda of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as this year’s chairman
In a video message before his flight, Marcos said the visit will serve two purposes: furthering the goals of ASEAN and solidifying bilateral ties with India.
“In this role, I will carry ASEAN’s voice to the Summit and help amplify our Community’s perspectives on the issues of our time, guided by the priorities of our Chairship—peace and security anchors, prosperity corridors, and people empowerment,” said Marcos.
He added that his goals include calling for fairer global governance, stronger disaster preparedness, the responsible use of new technologies, climate action, and the peaceful settlement of disputes under international law.
Meanwhile, Marcos is set to have a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as business leaders in the country, to which the Department of Foreign Affairs earlier announced.
“Prime Minister Modi and I will review the progress in the implementation of the Five-Year Plan of Action for 2025–2029 that underpins our Strategic Partnership,” the president said.
First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, Foreign Affairs Secretary Maria Teresa Lazaro, Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda, and Finance Secretary Frederick Go will join him in the said trip.
