MANILA, Philippines — The Marikina City government switched on 92 new LED lamps along key bike lane corridors on Friday night to improve safety for cyclists at night, as part of its push to strengthen active mobility in the city.
Mayor Maan Teodoro and Marikina First District Rep. Marcy Teodoro led the ceremonial lighting of the 2.6-kilometer stretch from Champagnat Street in Marikina Heights to Goodrich Village Subdivision in Concepcion Uno, with local officials saying the installations focused on areas near creeks and tunnels to ensure safer nighttime passage.
Teodoro said the project went beyond aesthetics and was meant tlo ensure that bike lanes were properly used and safe for the public.
“This is more than beautification of our bikeways. I always say this. This is not merely decorative. What we want is for our bike lanes to be properly used and safe,” she said.
The mayor added that while 2.6 kilometers have been illuminated, around eight more kilometers were set for improvement, noting that the city has about 70 kilometers of existing bike lanes and aims to expand them further as part of building an interconnected and sustainable mobility network.
