Marina seeks stronger cooperation amid Hormuz tensions

THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) urged government agencies and private stakeholders to strengthen cooperation to protect seafarers and ensure maritime resilience amid escalating security risks in the Strait of Hormuz.

Marina’s Overseas Shipping Service (OSS) hosted the 2nd Philippine Shipping and Shipbuilding Expo and Conference (Philshipcon) on Sept. 30 during the Blue Economy Annual Trade and Conference (Beacon) 2026. Themed “Navigating Uncertainty: Strengthening Maritime Cooperation in Addressing Crisis Situation,” the event targeted cross-sector coordination to mitigate shipping disruptions.

“We meet at a time when our industry has been reminded, in very real terms, of how much is at stake on the high seas and how many people depend on the institutions in this room working together,” said Gerico John Vincent Magbojos, chief of the Marina OSS Maritime Registry Division.

Judy Honrado, chief of the Marina OSS Cooperation and Strategic Maritime Initiatives Division, emphasized institutional discipline. “It takes foresight, trust, and discipline to act together even under uncertainty,” Honrado said. “This is precisely the spirit that Beacon and Philshipcon 2026 seek to nurture and sustain.”

The conference established joint crisis-response protocols among Marina, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Industry leaders also presented operational strategies to guarantee vessel safety and crew welfare during regional conflicts.

Marina recognized government entities, industry partners, and Filipino seafarers who safely navigated the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz during recent tensions.
