Marine cops foil smuggling bid

SEMPORNA: The Marine Police Force (MPF) here seized a boat with petrol, which was believed to be smuggled out to the neighbouring country, off Kampung Air waters, Monday.

The MPF team was patrolling during Ops Taring Gelora when they spotted a few individuals loading jerry cans, believed containing petrol, into a boat at Kampung Air jetty.

However, when the team approached the boat, the individuals fled towards the village.

The team inspected the boat and discovered 16 jerry cans containing 30 litres of petrol each and another jerry can containing 10 litres of petrol used for the boat engine.

Read more Sabah Region Four MPF Commander, ACP Ahmad Ariffin said the seizures were taken to Semporna MPF base and no one came to claim the items.

He said all the controlled items are believed to be smuggled out to the neighbouring country and the offence was under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

Ahmad said that all the seizures were worth RM6,204.50, including the boat and its engine.

“The case will be referred to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) for further action,” he said.
