Marks & Spencer to reopen under new franchise deal

BRITISH retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) has inked a franchise deal with Indonesia-based PT Mitra Adiperkasa Tbk (MAP) and plans open its first store in Glorietta before the end of 2026.

The agreement expands MAP’s existing relationship with M&S, said to span more than two decades in Indonesia and Vietnam.

The partnership is also expected to support the retailer’s growth ambitions in Southeast Asia through a franchise-led model.

“We are delighted to expand our partnership with MAP into the Philippines,” said Mark Lemming, managing director of M&S International.

“Having played a pivotal role in driving our growth in Indonesia, MAP’s deep local expertise gives us confidence as we accelerate our growth plans in Southeast Asia. We know there is strong demand for the M&S brand in the Philippines, and we’re excited to reopen our stores and online channels later this year,” he added.

MAP, one of Southeast Asia’s largest retail operators, said the Philippines was an important growth market for its fashion business.

“Taking over the M&S business in the Philippines marks an important milestone for MAP Fashion and reflects our commitment to growing iconic global brands across Southeast Asia,” MAP Fashion CEO Sameer Prasad said.

“The Philippines is an exciting and fast-growing market, and Manila is the ideal place to begin this next chapter for M&S,” he added.

Under the new arrangement, M&S will bring back its Fashion, Home & Beauty and Food offerings to Filipino consumers.

Founded in 1884 in the United Kingdom, Marks & Spencer is one of Britain’s best-known retail brands, offering clothing, beauty products, home goods and specialty food items.

Earlier this year, the retailer announced plans to transition to a new franchise operator as part of a broader effort to streamline its international business and work with a smaller number of strategic partners.

For MAP, the deal further strengthens its footprint in Southeast Asia’s retail sector. The Indonesian-listed company manages a portfolio of international brands across fashion, sports, food and lifestyle categories, and operates thousands of stores throughout the region.
