Martin Freeman quietly married his partner of six years, French actor and writer Rachel Benaissa, it has emerged.
The Hobbit star appeared with Benaissa in a rare red carpet appearance together at the London Film Festival on Thursday evening (15 October).
Benaissa, 34, wore an engagement ring with a large emerald alongside a gold band set with diamonds on her wedding finger, while Freeman, 55, also wore a gold band on his wedding finger.
A spokesperson for Freeman confirmed that he and Benaissa were married to The Independent.
Born in Toulouse and raised in London, Benaissa has appeared in the BBC drama Normal People, comedy series This Way Up, and Netflix film Irish Wish.
She and Freeman began dating in 2020, with Freeman previously in a 16-year relationship with his Sherlock co-star Amanda Abbington.
Freeman played the doctor John Watson opposite Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes, while Abbington was cast as Watson’s love interest, Mary.
They split in 2016, with Abbington, 52, stating that the long periods they spent apart due to filming had played a role in the decision.
They share daughter Grace, 18, and son Joe, 20, and remain on friendly terms, with Freeman reportedly supporting his ex-wife after she complained about the behaviour of her former Strictly Come Dancing partner, Giovanni Pernice.
Freeman tends to keep details of his personal life private, but did tell Jessie and Lennie Ware – the hosts of the podcast Table Manners – about Benaissa’s love of food last year.
“She’s not a Cordon Bleu… she’s a massive cheese and wine w***e,” he said, adding: “That’s what she would say about herself.”
He continued: “She says that about herself. ‘I’m a cheese and wine w***e.’ It’s not all she is, but no, she loves all that stuff. We like cooking.”
The actor, whose previous credits include The Office and Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, is currently promoting his new film A Long Winter.
