Mauricio Ruffy revealed that discussions about the potential matchup had taken place before the UFC Freedom 250 announcement.

Rumours about a possible fight between Ruffy and McGregor had circulated as the MMA premier promotion explored options for the historic White House card, and the Brazilian’s latest comments now suggest the idea was not just speculation.

The fighter explained that ‘The Notorious’ himself had raised the possibility of the bout before choosing another direction. His remarks offer a rare glimpse into negotiations around McGregor’s return.

Ruffy addressed the situation during an appearance on the Overdogs Brasil podcast and confirmed that conversations about the fight did happen.

His comments indicate that McGregor personally decided against advancing on the idea.

“There were some fallacies about [me] fighting Paddy Pimblett,” Ruffy began by saying.

“Conor McGregor even talked about the possibility of a fight, opened up the possibility of fighting, it was discussed, but he’s the one who makes the decisions and he made the decision not to fight. I also didn’t have high expectations about it” the 29-year-old stated.

Mauricio Ruffy will instead face Michael Chandler at the White House card

Instead of facing McGregor, Ruffy will have to handle another UFC veteran at the White House: Michael Chandler.

Chandler was widely speculated to be the Irishman’s opponent for his Octagon return. They were supposed to fight in 2024, but the bout did not come to fruition due to an injury suffered by McGregor.

The 39-year-old American was vocal about his willingness to face ‘The Notorious’ in the iconic card.

However, as the UFC and McGregor seem far from reaching a deal, Chandler will have to overcome a 10-year disadvantage to stop his three-fight defeat streak against the Brazilian prospect.
