SHAH ALAM, June 11 — The venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026 in Selangor will be announced in August.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said that several venue proposals had been received, and the matter needs requires careful reviewed before being finalised.

“The timeline for the announcement is set a year before the tournament; I expect it to be around mid-August before National Day (on August 31), once evaluations are complete.

“The theme and the types of sports to be contested will also be announced at that time,” he told the press after the Selangor State Sports Awards 2024 ceremony yesterday.

Simultaneously, Amirudin acknowledged that Selangor holds an advantage as host of the biennial games and that the state is preparing its athletes to be in top form.

“Competing on home ground offers a greater opportunity, as many of the venues are where our athletes train and compete regularly.

“For the past 23 years, the Selangor Sports Council has been a strong and consistent talent factory for athletes. In addition to development efforts, we will also offer the best sports categories to ensure success at Sukma 2026,” he said.

On July 18 last year, the Malaysia Games Supreme Committee decided that Selangor would host Sukma 2026.

The decision was made after Selangor’s offer to take over hosting duties from the National Sports Council (NSC), which was initially slated to organise the event based on Sukma’s rotational hosting system.

The last time Selangor hosted Sukma was in 1998, when the state emerged as overall champion.
