THE Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) has made clear that its sole priority at present is the Sabah state election, setting aside any discussion on the party’s future position within Barisan Nasional (BN).

MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon said the party had neither the time nor the space to entertain such debates while its entire machinery is deployed for the Sabah campaign.

“Right now we are all focused on the Sabah state election. So we have yet to find the time or space to discuss that matter. Not at this moment. All of us are concentrating our efforts and are in Sabah,” he told Sinar Harian on Monday.

He was responding to questions regarding the party’s position in BN following recent developments involving its long-time coalition partner, MIC.

The issue gained traction after MIC’s 79th Annual General Assembly on Sunday, where the party decided to leave BN.

Nevertheless, MIC president Tan Sri S A Vigneswaran confirmed that all three motions presented to the delegates – including a proposal to exit BN – had been accepted and forwarded to the Central Working Committee for consideration.

In his policy address, he said MIC was no longer respected within BN, “whether as siblings or as partners”, and argued that the party could only reclaim its dignity by renewing its struggle beginning with the youth.

Chong stressed that MCA’s leadership is currently spread throughout Sabah, fully mobilised for the state election. He reiterated that the party’s attention “is more on the state polls at the moment”, adding that MCA would do its utmost to support the campaign and secure a strong result at the ballot box. - November 18, 2025
