An MCD cleaning truck caught fire on the Geeta Colony flyover in east Delhi’s Shahdara area on Monday afternoon, causing heavy traffic congestion on the busy stretch, officials said.
According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), information about the blaze was received at around 2.56 pm, following which two fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
Officials said the fire rapidly engulfed the truck within minutes, sending thick plumes of smoke billowing across the flyover and causing panic among commuters and nearby residents.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control after a brief operation and prevented it from spreading further, a DFS official said.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
The truck driver told officials that smoke suddenly began emanating from the vehicle while it was moving on the flyover. Realising the danger, he immediately stopped the truck and jumped out before the flames intensified.
The incident disrupted traffic movement on the Geeta Colony flyover for some time, leading to long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road. Traffic police personnel later worked to ease congestion and restore normal movement in the area.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
