SHAH ALAM – "Do not pass judgment based on a viral video, but do not leave questions of integrity unanswered either."

This was the firm stance taken by Malaysian Corruption Watch (MCW) president Jais Abdul Karim regarding a viral social media case concerning alleged cable theft, which was claimed to have been escorted by a patrol vehicle.

According to him, if there are elements of assisting, protecting, or conspiring with criminal activity, an independent investigation and strict action must be carried out without compromise.

"At this stage, MCW stresses that the content of the video or social media post cannot be viewed as conclusive evidence of misconduct, protection, or involvement by any enforcement officer," he told Sinar on Monday.

He added that MCW's preliminary checks had yet to find sufficient authoritative verification regarding the actual context of the recording.

"However, allegations like these should not be left without clarification, as they directly impact public integrity, trust and confidence in enforcement institutions.

"MCW suggests that the authorities promptly identify the location, date and time of the incident, as well as the vehicles involved and the officers on duty," he said.

He added that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, dashcam recordings, patrol vehicle Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, communication records and duty logs could also help determine the actual context of the incident.

He said if the patrol vehicle was indeed carrying out official duties, the matter needs to be explained to the public to prevent slander and negative perceptions.

Earlier, video footage of the incident went viral across several social media platforms, including Facebook and Threads.

Based on CCTV footage from a nearby house, it is understood that the incident occurred early on Saturday morning.

The issue was also posted by singer and activist Caprice, whose real name is Ariz Ramli, on his official Facebook page.

However, as of 1.15pm, there has been no official confirmation from the authorities regarding the allegations surrounding the viral issue.

Sinar is still awaiting an official statement from the Royal Malaysia Police.
