Michael Carrick suffered his first defeat as Manchester United head coach this week, raising new questions about whether he should be given the job on a full-time basis.

While the early results have generally been good under Carrick, one loss doesn’t seem to be enough for the club to make such a big decision. There’s more to managing United than just a short run of positive form, and the club will likely want more evidence before committing.

Carrick’s start at United has been mostly positive, and fans are well aware of that. But turning that into a permanent appointment is still up for debate.

Carrick’s future at Old Trafford is under fresh scrutiny following the loss to Newcastle, though it’s not just about the result. The real concern is the team’s performance over the past month.

However, when given the chance to vote, only 16% of fans believe Carrick is completely wrong for the job and are writing him off already.

On the other hand, 37% of United supporters feel he has already done enough to earn a longer stay in charge.

The largest group sits in between. A full 47% of fans are still on the fence. That undecided group probably would have leaned toward backing him fully just a few weeks ago.

If Ineos shares that sentiment, Carrick still has work to do. Results haven’t been bad overall, but performances will need to improve if he wants to make his case for staying on full-time.

How fans on TalkingPoints view Carrick’s prospects

The comment section reflected the divided opinions among supporters, not just through votes but in open debates as well.

One fan said: “It’s too early to make a call on him, to be fair. But his comments after the game have given me much more optimism. He seems like he has the right character”

Another wrote: “Give him the job already. The loss was not caused by him but by the board and management, who have been giving away our valued players to ‘balance the books’. Those players could have been good for squad team rotation. The United squad lacks strength in depth, and the players who have been given away – they demonised them, bomb squad needs to be returned.”

One fan offered a measured take: “Give him till the end of the season. Then make the decision.”

Another posted: “When you look at what he has done so far, making us play so well and motivating the players, you have to put him in the frame. And this is with players he may want to change for better players”.

Carrick had another supporter saying: “He’s the best available candidate for the job, give him a chance”.

The majority are still undecided, though. Ineos now faces an important choice about Carrick’s future, with results and opinion currently split.
