Mike Brown did more than lead the Knicks to their first NBA championship in over half a century. He brought structure, composure and belief to a team that ended the wait with a 94-90 Game 5 win over the San Antonio Spurs.

His impact showed in the way New York trusted Jalen Brunson late, stayed connected defensively and accepted roles around their stars. The Knicks looked like a team fully committed to the same plan.

That commitment did not happen by accident. After the Finals win, Brown revealed the pre-season “trick” he used to make sure everyone signed up to the same standard.

The Knicks made headlines in several ways after Game 5, so some important comments slipped out of the spotlight. Brown’s explanation of his pre-season contract was one of them.

He revealed: “It was a contract that I had everybody sign opening dinner night and I still have it framed. Everybody’s signature from Mr. Dolan to Leon Rose, all the coaches, all the players, all the staff that was there that night signed.

“Basically it was about committing to sacrifice, having a competitive spirit, being connected, believing in each other, in the process, while holding everybody accountable, even myself.”

The coach later added: “I told everybody that night: if you’re not gonna abide by this, I’d have more respect for you to not sign it than to sign it and b—— your way through tonight, and b—— your way through this and everybody bought in from day 1.”

That buy-in became the foundation. Brown did not just coach tactics. He set the standard before the season began.
