Modi congratulates Anwar following PM appointment

KUALA LUMPUR – India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim following his appointment as Prime Minister, yesterday.

In a brief tweet, Modi said: “I look forward to working closely together to further strengthen India-Malaysia Enhanced Strategic Partnership.”

In response, Anwar thanked Narendra for the wishes, tweeting: “India is an important partner for Malaysia.

“I'm looking forward to working closely with you to strengthen ties and cooperation in various areas including trade, investment and culture.”

Following Anwar's appointment, yesterday, several world leaders have since congratulated him, with some via phone call.

Among the first to congratulate him include Indonesian president Joko Widodo, Turkiye president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as well as the Dalai Lama.

The United States Department of State also congratulated Malaysia and Anwar on becoming the prime minister.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said the 15th general election was a “demonstration of the power of democracy” as many among the millions of citizens who voted had done so for the first time.

Anwar was sworn in as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister yesterday after a week-long political impasse stemming from the November 19 general election that saw no major coalition command a simple majority to form the government. – The Vibes, November 25, 2022
