Dealing with the Unexpected
I remember a few years back, I was preparing my powerpoint slides for a particular soft skills training. Upon completion I saved it on the laptop and I was confident that everything will be smooth on the day of presentation.
But to my surprise as my training session was about to begin, I was not able to open the powerpoint slides due to an error, I was about to panic but then I reminded myself I had to stay calm in order to find the right solution.
Indeed I did, I always saved a back up copy in my thumb-drive just in case there was a problem with the laptop, I was thankful when I located the thumb-drive and I was able to open the powerpoint slides again.
I was able to complete the training session without any interruption.
This experience taught me an important lesson, no matter how well you plan your week, the unexpected may happen.
A project changes.
A client cancels.
A deadline moves forward.
A key team member resigns.
A problem appears without warning.
Your success is not determined by how few problems you face, but by how well you respond when they arise.
This week, remember these three principles:
• Stay calm. Clear thinking beats emotional reactions.
• Stay adaptable. The ability to adjust is one of the most valuable workplace skills.
• Stay solution-focused. Don't spend all your energy overthinking about the problem but think about the solutions
Every unexpected challenge is an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, adaptability, and resilience.
You may not control what happens this week, but you can always control how you respond.
