SHAH ALAM - Malaysia is expected to enter the monsoon transition phase on Oct 9, bringing a gradual reduction in transboundary haze but increasing the likelihood of thunderstorms, heavy rain and flash floods across several areas.
Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the transition phase was expected to continue until the end of October, marking the end of the Southwest Monsoon season which began on May 14.
“During the transition period, the country is expected to experience light winds from various directions, a condition that could encourage the formation of thunderstorm clouds.
“These thunderstorms commonly bring heavy rain and lightning, accompanied by strong winds over short periods, particularly during the afternoon and early evening.
“The affected areas are expected to include most parts of western and interior Peninsular Malaysia, as well as western Sabah and Sarawak.
“Such weather conditions could potentially result in flash floods, water surges, fallen trees and damage to weak structures,” he said in a statement today.
At the same time, the end of the Southwest Monsoon is expected to gradually reduce the effects of transboundary haze from neighbouring countries due to changes in wind direction.
The public has been advised to remain vigilant throughout the transition phase and to stay updated on weather forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia.
Weather information and warnings can be obtained through the department's official website, the myCuaca mobile application and its official social media platforms.
The public may also contact the MetMalaysia hotline at 1-300-22-1638 for further enquiries.
