
A growing body of evidence suggests that not all produce delivers the same heart benefits, even when the overall dietary message stays the same: eat more fruit and vegetables.
A new analysis has sharpened that idea further. It suggests many adults are still falling short on flavanols, a class of naturally occurring plant compounds linked with cardiovascular protection.
The finding matters because flavanols are not rare laboratory ingredients. They are found in everyday foods and drinks that sit easily within normal diets. Yet the study indicates that simply meeting standard fruit-and-vegetable advice does not always translate into reaching the intake level associated with heart health benefits.
Researchers reporting in Food and Function examined dietary data from about 30,000 people in the United Kingdom and the United States. Their goal was straightforward: determine whether current produce recommendations are enough to supply roughly 500 mg of flavanols a day, a level previously associated with a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease. The answer, in most cases, was no.
That is the key point. Plenty of people may believe that a generally healthy diet automatically covers flavanols. The new analysis suggests otherwise. Food choices inside broad groups matter. A person can eat the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables and still consume relatively little of these compounds if their choices are dominated by lower-flavanol items.
Flavanols belong to the wider family of polyphenols, plant compounds that have attracted attention for their possible roles in blood vessel function, inflammation control and antioxidant activity. They are especially common in certain berries, apples, tea, cocoa and some legumes. The science is not saying these foods are magic. It is saying that some are much richer sources than others.
Earlier work from the large randomised COSMOS trial helped set the stage. In that study, daily intake of 500 mg flavanols was linked with up to a 27% lower risk of cardiovascular death. That figure has helped fuel interest in whether common diets, rather than supplements or special products, can deliver enough of the compound to matter. The latest analysis set out to test that assumption using real-world eating patterns.
It did so in two ways. First, it used data from COSMOS to examine whether current diet guidance could reach the 500 mg target. Then it turned to EPIC Norfolk, a population-based cohort, to see whether the pattern held in a separate group with different food habits. The result was consistent. Most people did not come close.
That does not mean fruit and vegetables are being unfairly judged. Quite the opposite. Nutrition experts are keen to stress that overall produce intake remains the priority. The problem is not that people should obsess over flavanols at the expense of everything else. The problem is that many still do not eat enough fruit and vegetables in general, let alone enough of the flavanol-rich ones.
Still, the findings may help refine public health advice. The usual message, “eat more fruit and vegetables”, is useful but broad. It does not distinguish between a food that supplies a modest amount of flavanols and one that offers considerably more.
In practical terms, this distinction could matter for people trying to improve their cardiovascular risk profile.
Among the foods highlighted in the study and related research were plums, cranberries, blackberries, green tea, broad beans, cherries, apples with skin, strawberries, blueberries and pinto beans. The amounts listed were approximate, but they show the spread clearly. A few examples:
- Plums, 500 g: about 450 mg of flavanols
- Cranberries, 250 g: about 300 mg
- Blackberries, 200 g: about 250 mg
- Green tea, one 250 ml cup: about 200 mg
- Broad beans or fava beans, 80 g: about 140 mg
- Cherries, 400 g: about 130 mg
- Apples with skin, 200 g, or one medium apple: about 110 mg
- Strawberries, 200 g: about 90 mg
- Blueberries, 150 g: about 80 mg
- Pinto beans, 40 g, or 2 tablespoons dry: about 70 mg
The pattern is striking. A fruit bowl is not automatically equal to a flavanol boost. Apples, berries and tea stand out more than many people might expect. That is useful information, especially for people who already eat reasonably well and want to make small adjustments without overhauling their entire diet.
The findings do not justify a rush towards “superfood” thinking. They do suggest that choosing flavanol-rich foods more deliberately could offer an extra layer of cardiovascular support. For someone who already eats fruit and vegetables regularly, a handful of blackberries, a medium apple with skin or a daily cup of tea may be a simple way to raise intake.
This is where the study becomes most relevant for everyday life. Health advice often fails when it is too complicated. People rarely sustain changes that feel difficult, expensive or disconnected from routine. The more realistic path is usually the better one. A bowl of berries at breakfast. Tea instead of a sweetened drink. Apples as a snack. Beans in lunch or dinner. Small steps, repeated often, can add up.
There is also an important caution here. Flavanols are only one part of the cardiovascular picture. Blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, physical activity, weight, sleep and overall dietary quality all play major roles. No single nutrient can compensate for a poor overall pattern. A diet high in salt, ultra-processed foods and sugary drinks will not be fixed by a serving of blackberries.
Even so, the study does have a clear public health message. If the aim is to improve heart health through diet, it may not be enough to count portions alone. Food quality within those portions matters. Not all fruit and vegetables provide the same concentration of beneficial plant compounds. The recommendation to eat more produce remains sound. This research simply adds precision.
That precision could influence how clinicians, dietitians and public health bodies talk about diet in the future. It may also help people make better choices without feeling overwhelmed. Broad guidance is still important. Yet more detailed advice can make healthy eating more effective, especially for people focused on cardiovascular prevention.
The analysis also raises a wider question about nutrition guidelines. Should recommendations continue to focus mainly on quantity, or should they increasingly consider composition? That is not an easy question. Public health advice must remain simple enough for the general population to follow. At the same time, it should reflect the growing evidence that some foods within a group deliver more benefit than others.
For now, the safest conclusion is balanced and practical. Eat enough fruit and vegetables first. Then, if possible, favour the ones richer in flavanols. Berries, apples with skin and tea are easy examples. So are cherries and beans. The aim is not perfection. It is steady improvement.
The new findings should also reassure people who are already making good choices. You do not need to overhaul your diet in a dramatic way. You may only need to shift the balance slightly. A more intentional approach could help turn an otherwise healthy diet into one that is better aligned with heart protection.
That is a subtle but important shift. It turns nutrition from a vague instruction into something more actionable. And in public health, that matters.
The message is simple enough, though the implication is significant: more fruit and vegetables is good. More flavanol-rich fruit and vegetables may be better.
