Mukhriz Mahathir says Tun Dr Siti Hasmah was prepared to leave her loved ones before suffering a heart attack and dying at IJN, aged 100
PUTRAJAYA: The late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali had said she was already prepared to leave us all while receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN), before she died this morning.
Her son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, said his mother had made the remark when he visited her at the institute last night.
“I was with her last night. At that time, she was at IJN for another ailment. She was in very good spirits, but she told me that she was already prepared to leave us all,” he told reporters after attending the State Funeral Ceremony at the Pusara Negara (National Cemetery) here today.
Mukhriz said his mother had been admitted to IJN last Saturday, but her condition became critical after she suffered a heart attack at about 8 am today.
“Unexpectedly, I was informed by the hospital that she had suffered a heart attack at about 8 am and I rushed to IJN. The specialists tried to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before she was transferred to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU),” he said.
He said the hospital later informed the family that CPR was continued for another 15 minutes and that it would be stopped if her heart did not respond.
“And at that point, we understood what the doctors meant. At exactly 9.30 am, she left us all,” he said.
On his father Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s condition, Mukhriz said the former Prime Minister had been at IJN to accompany his wife while she was in the ward.
“Tun Mahathir was not ill, he was only accompanying her throughout her stay in the hospital and has now returned home. Of course, he is deeply saddened by the loss of his life partner of more than 70 years,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mukhriz, on behalf of the family, expressed his deepest appreciation and thanks to Malaysians and people around the world for their sincere messages and condolences.
He also urged the public to pray that his late mother’s soul would be showered with mercy, her sins forgiven and that she would be placed among the righteous.
