PUTRAJAYA - Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali told her son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, that she was ready to leave them all, a day before taking her last breath.
Mukhriz said he managed to spend time with his mother on the night before she passed away at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur.
He said despite being at IJN due to other health issues, Dr Hasmah was in cheerful spirits at the time.
"At that time, she was already at IJN for a different illness, but her mood was very cheerful. Even so, she told me that she was ready to leave us all.
"So it seemed she had placed her full trust in Allah," he said when met after Dr Hasmah's funeral ceremony at the Precinct 20 Islamic Cemetery, here on Monday.
The former Kedah menteri besar said that on Monday morning, he received news from the hospital that his mother was experiencing heart complications before rushing to IJN.
"The specialists at IJN were performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedures on Dr Hasmah at the time before she was moved to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU).
"At 9am, we were informed that the CPR being carried out would only be continued for another 15 minutes and if her heart did not resume functioning, the CPR procedure would be stopped," he said.
He said the family understood the meaning behind the doctor's explanation before Dr Hasmah took her final breath.
Meanwhile, Mukhriz also shared a touching moment when his mother was still thinking about the future of the people and the nation until her final moments.
"Up until her final moments, she was still thinking about our future," he said.
According to Mukhriz, he considered himself among the fortunate children as, up to the age of 62, he still had both his mother and father.
"I consider that a very meaningful blessing, not just for our family, but God willing, also for the nation, because Dr Hasmah was truly someone who always prioritised service to the people and the country," he said.
