The two policies, and why the maths differs from cars

Third-party is the legal minimum under the Road Transport Act: it covers injury to others and damage to their property. Your bike, your injuries, not covered. Comprehensive adds your own machine: accident damage, fire, and theft.

Here’s the twist that’s different from cars: for a RM5,000 kapchai, comprehensive cover can feel expensive relative to the bike’s value, so many riders default to third-party and self-insure the bike. That can be rational, if you could genuinely replace the bike from savings tomorrow. If losing the bike means losing your ability to get to work, the calculation flips.

Theft: the risk that hits motorcycles hardest

Motorcycles are stolen at far higher rates than cars, they’re light, quick to move, and easy to strip. Two things follow: third-party-only riders carry the theft risk entirely themselves, and even comprehensive policies pay out on market value, which for older bikes may be well below what a replacement costs you. Ask your insurer how they set the sum insured, and whether an agreed-value option exists for your model.

You and your pillion are not the bike

A comprehensive policy protects the machine, not the rider. Personal injury to yourself needs a rider’s personal accident (PA) add-on or a standalone PA policy, and if you regularly carry a pillion, check whether the add-on extends to them. This is the single most common coverage gap we see: bike insured, human not.

Riding for Grab, Foodpanda or Lalamove?

Two separate issues. First, a standard private-use policy may exclude commercial use, an accident while on a delivery job could void a claim, so declare p-hailing/delivery use and take the right usage class. Second, gig riders fall under PERKESO’s Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS), established under the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017 (Act 789), contribution is mandatory for p-hailing and delivery riders, and it covers employment injury arising from work, not general riding. Two takeaways: confirm your SKSPS contribution is actually active (don’t assume the platform handles it), and remember SKSPS covers work injury, it doesn’t replace PA cover for the rest of your riding life. What premiums look like

Premiums are quote-based by design under the liberalised motor tariff, there is no single published price list. The ranges below are editorial illustrations of typical market spreads by class; the article’s comparison CTA is where readers get their actual number:

Bike classThird-party (from)Comprehensive (from)
Kapchai ≤150cc~RM70–120/yr~RM200–400/yr
250–500cc~RM120–200/yr~RM400–900/yr
Superbike 600cc+~RM200–350/yr~RM900–2,500+/yr
THE MOVEbefore renewing on autopilot, get three quotes, and check what the price includes. A RM50 saving that drops theft cover or your PA add-on isn’t a saving; it’s a transfer of risk to you.

Five questions before you renew

  1. Market value or agreed value, and what’s my bike actually insured for?
  2. Does my policy cover theft, and with what excess?
  3. Am I (and my pillion) covered, or only the bike?
  4. Is my usage class right, especially if I do any delivery riding?
  5. What add-ons am I paying for, and which have I never needed?

Basis: Road Transport Act third-party requirements; liberalised motor tariff framework (BNM). Premium ranges illustrative, obtain live quotes. PA and SOCSO terms per insurer/PERKESO documentation.
