TAWAU: A 33-year-old motorcyclist suspected of riding under the influence of alcohol was among two men arrested during a six-hour motorcycle enforcement operation at Batu 24, Jalan Apas, from Saturday night to early Sunday.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh said the motorcyclist was detained after an EBA II test recorded an alcohol concentration of 58 milligrams per 100 millilitres.
The case is being investigated under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The second man was arrested for an offence under Section 42(1) of the same Act.
Rosdi said the operation, conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) of the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD), resulted in 10 summonses being issued – seven to motorcyclists and three to car drivers.
The offences included driving without a valid licence, non-compliant registration numbers, vehicles without registration plates, riding a motorcycle before the age of 17, failing to wear a seatbelt and illegal exhaust modifications.
“During the operation, police checked 60 vehicles, including 30 motorcycles, 13 cars, five four-wheel drives, two lorries, five vans or buses, one taxi and four multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs).
“The team subsequently impounded 14 vehicles, comprising 11 motorcycles and three cars, for various traffic violations,” he said.
Rosdi said the operation aimed to improve compliance with road laws and crack down on traffic offences.
He said enforcement would continue to be stepped up to ensure road users complied with the law and avoided behaviour that could endanger themselves and others.
“The police will not compromise with anyone who disregards road safety laws, particularly driving or riding under the influence of alcohol, which can endanger lives,” he said.
He advised the public to hold valid driving licences, comply with traffic regulations and refrain from modifying vehicles in ways that breach the law.
“Do not turn the roads into a place where you gamble with your own life and the lives of others,” he said.
