KEPALA BATAS – A man has died while two other motorcyclists were injured following an accident involving two motorcycles and two cars at Kilometre 127.4 of the North-South Expressway here on Tuesday.
In the incident at about 1.04pm, the 50-year-old victim, who was riding a Honda Silverwing GT motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Health Ministry (MOH) medical team.
Meanwhile, the pillion rider, a 50-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries and received further treatment from the MOH ambulance crew.
The deceased was subsequently handed over to the police for further action.
Penang Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said that they received an emergency call at 1.04pm before the fire engine arrived at the scene 10 minutes later.
He said the crash involved a Honda Silverwing GT motorcycle, a Yamaha MT-09 motorcycle and two Perodua Myvi cars.
“The operational team, wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE), carried out rescue operations upon arriving at the location.
“The rider of the Yamaha MT-09, a 50-year-old man who was thrown onto the embankment, was brought up to safety with the assistance of the Sungai Puyu Volunteer Fire Brigade,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
He added that another victim suffered severe injuries and was also rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“The drivers of the two Perodua Myvis, aged 47 and 44, escaped unhurt.
"The operation involved six personnel, including a supervisor, alongside a Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT) vehicle from the Kepala Batas Fire and Rescue Station. The operation, which also received assistance from the police, MOH and Plus, ended at 3.05pm," he said.
It is understood that the crash, which occurred on the route heading from Sungai Petani towards Penang, caused a traffic jam lasting for over three hours.
