Kota Kinabalu: A man in his 50s was killed after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle along Jalan Pintas Tuaran, near the traffic lights at the Ford Sales Centre, Thursday.
City Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda said the crash occurred at 2.22pm when the motorcyclist, travelling from Likas towards Inanam, was believed to have made a U-turn and switched from the left to the right lane without noticing a 4WD vehicle already in that lane.
“The motorcycle grazed the rear left side of the 4WD, causing the rider to be thrown off and suffer serious injuries,” said Kasim.
The injured rider was rushed to Likas Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 3.46pm while receiving treatment at the Emergency and Trauma Department. The 4WD driver escaped unharmed.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was likely caused by the motorcyclist’s unsafe lane change.
Kasim added that further investigations are ongoing, including vehicle inspections, CCTV footage review, and alcohol and drug screenings.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
He also reminded motorists to always stay alert, follow traffic rules, and ensure it is safe before making any manoeuvres, to avoid such tragedies.
