SEREMBAN – Muda has announced it will not contest the Negeri Sembilan state election on Aug 1, choosing instead to focus on strengthening the party ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16) while backing candidates from the progressive bloc.
Muda president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said the decision was jointly made by the party's political bureau and its Negeri Sembilan chapter as part of its longer-term strategy to build organisational strength.
"Muda's political bureau, together with Muda Negeri Sembilan, has decided not to contest this state election so that we can focus on building Muda's strength ahead of GE16.
"Muda has decided to give its full support to candidates from the progressive bloc, namely the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) and our friends from the Malaysian Orang Asli Party (Asli)," she said during a press conference at the PSM Negeri Sembilan office on Thursday.
Amira said the party remained encouraged despite failing to win any seats in the recent Johor state election, pointing out that Muda had recorded an improved vote share compared with its performance across six states in the 2023 state polls.
She said the increase reflected growing public acceptance of the progressive bloc's agenda.
"Muda Negeri Sembilan will mobilise its members to help campaign for progressive bloc candidates by highlighting issues affecting the people's economy, climate change, human rights, healthcare and education throughout the Negeri Sembilan state election.
"I will also be campaigning for the progressive bloc candidates. We hope this election will demonstrate the importance of the progressive bloc's voice in Malaysia's political landscape," she said.
During the campaign, Muda members in Negeri Sembilan will assist progressive bloc candidates by focusing on key issues including the economy, climate change, human rights, healthcare and education.
In the 2023 Negeri Sembilan state election, Muda fielded only one candidate, Ahmad Qusyairi Abdull Rahim, in the Temiang state constituency.
