Malaysian discus thrower Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin breaks his own national record with a 62.87m throw to win gold in Hungary

KUALA LUMPUR: National discus thrower Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin struck gold with an impressive display at the Nemzetkozi Atletikai Balatkn Bajnoksag Championship in Veszprem, Hungary, yesterday.

Making the triumph even sweeter, the 30-year-old ended a nine-year wait to rewrite his own national discus throw record registering a new best of 62.87m.

The previous national record of 62.55m was set by Muhammad Irfan at the Austrian Athletics Championships in Linz, Austria, in 2017.

Muhammad Irfan delivered a commanding performance to finish ahead of two home competitors, with Zalan Strigenzc securing silver at 53.84m and Zsombor Takacs taking bronze with 51.31m.
