
Kota Kinabalu: Two police personnel were injured in a scuffle with a mentally challenged man who held his mother hostage at their home in Taman Jaya Diri, Sepanggar, on Monday.
The former Hospital Mesra patient, 42, had earlier set free his sister. He had locked both family members inside the house, armed with a meat cleaver.
Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief ACP Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the Kota Kinabalu Criminal Investigation Division Chief and a few other officers were among those who responded to the 2.30pm distress call.

“After almost two hours with no signs of cooperation, officers broke the door and stormed in,” he said.
Zaidi said the suspect’s mother was saved but the suspect began acting aggressively.
“A scuffle broke out and the suspect slashed and injured a senior officer and a Sergeant.
“Both suffered injuries to the arm, head and right shoulder while the suspect suffered minor injuries to the face.” The suspect’s mother was not injured.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder where the penalty is a prison sentence of up to 20 years if convicted.
