Malaysia suffer setback as Pearly Tan withdraws from Uber Cup with injury, raising concerns over team prospects
MALAYSIA’S Uber Cup aspirations have been dealt a major blow following the withdrawal of women’s doubles specialist Pearly Tan due to a recurring back injury.
The tournament, scheduled to take place in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3, will now proceed without one-half of the nation’s top-ranked pair. Pearly, who partners M. Thinaah, sustained the injury during last week’s Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) in Ningbo, China.
In an emotional social media post, the world number two expressed her profound disappointment at being sidelined from the prestigious team event.
“I apologise for disappointing everyone. I am upset that I have once again been injured,” Pearly shared, adding that the physical setback has taken a significant mental toll.

“These past few days have not been easy. I have not been able to sleep… hoping there was still another option,” she wrote.
The shuttler admitted that the injury brought back difficult memories of a similar health crisis three years ago.
“Those who know me know I would never leave the court. I fight until the very last point. But this time… my body is telling me to stop and I need to listen,” she said.
Despite her absence from the court, Pearly offered her full backing to her teammates heading to Denmark.
“It is very disappointing not to be with my teammates and go through this journey together. I am truly sorry that I cannot be there to fight alongside you.
“Please know that my heart is always with the team and I will continue to support every single one of you wholeheartedly,” she added.

National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky confirmed that the decision to withdraw Pearly was made after a final medical assessment.
“Pearly is not at the level required to compete,” Rexy stated, emphasising that the move was necessary to ensure the squad’s overall readiness and to protect the player’s long-term career.
