In a push for sustainable urban mobility and environmental conservation, NDMC Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari travelled by public transport on Monday to urge citizens to adopt eco-friendly commuting options.
As part of an initiative aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation and environmental protection, the two leaders first travelled in a shared e-rickshaw before boarding the Delhi Metro from Sewa Teerth to Rajiv Chowk Metro Station. During the journey, they interacted with commuters and thanked regular public transport users for helping reduce traffic congestion, fuel consumption and pollution.
Addressing mediapersons, Chahal said public transport, electric mobility and energy conservation were essential pillars in building a clean and sustainable India. He stressed environmental protection could become a successful mass movement only through collective public participation and urged citizens to adopt environmentally responsible lifestyle choices.
In a major announcement aimed at promoting electric mobility, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) introduced a 50 per cent concession in parking fees for electric vehicles at all NDMC parking facilities from Monday.
Following the metro ride, Chahal and Tiwari visited parking areas in Connaught Place, where they distributed flowers and chocolates to electric vehicle users to encourage wider EV adoption.
According to NDMC officials, the initiative is intended to strengthen awareness around sustainable transportation, promote public transport and electric vehicles, improve last-mile connectivity and encourage citizens to actively contribute to environmental protection.
Later in the day, Chahal met office-bearers and members of the Delhi High Court Bar Association to discuss measures supporting sustainable practices and digital work culture. The meeting was attended by Senior Advocate and Association President N. Hariharan, Vice-President Sachin Puri and other members of the Bar.
Discussions focused on promoting carpooling through electric vehicles, encouraging virtual meetings, reducing carbon footprints and conserving fuel through environmentally responsible professional practices.
Chahal said the judiciary had always played a significant role in nation-building and emphasised the need for institutions and citizens to work collectively towards transforming the Prime Minister’s vision of sustainable development into a nationwide movement.
The Delhi High Court Bar Association extended its support to the initiative and resolved to promote environmentally conscious practices in both professional and daily life.
