Nepal death toll climbs to nearly 500 amid further flood warnings

  • Nepal and China have issued warnings of fresh flooding risks following a catastrophic glacier collapse that killed more than 469 people.
  • Search and rescue operations are attempting to locate at least 1,000 missing people, including 33 British tourists and nearly 650 other foreign nationals.
  • Nepalese authorities warned a newly formed flood lake is at risk of breaching, while China cautioned that water equivalent to 1,200 Olympic swimming pools could burst a dammed lake on its side of the border.
  • Disaster management officials reported that villages along a 40km to 50km stretch were completely wiped out by what was described as a “tsunami from the sky”.
  • Experts at Nepal Centre for Disaster Studies warned that conditions could worsen, with further landslides expected to complicate emergency responses.
