Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was delighted with Alex Murphy's performance for victory over Fiorentina.
Irish youngster impressed at centre-half for the preseason win.
Murphy said: "Alex did really well today, I think the beauty of his performances in pre-season have been versatility. He has played left-back and centre-half, today right-sided centre-half.
"For a left-footed player that is a challenge for him. I thought he did really well and was helped by Sven and Kieran Trippier's experience alongside him, we gave a good defensive display.
"Alex can be very pleased with that effort."
