Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is confident his players understand it's a squad game.
Newcastle kicked off their campaign with a 5-1 rout of Aston Villa on Saturday.
"The group as a whole know we need a good squad," Howe said. "You can't play in the competitions we're in this year without the ability to rotate. There's an understanding.
"There's an understanding of that there's a load of games. Some players might have to be patient week to week but as soon as the games start going midweek, that squad will be used for sure.
"We need the strongest bench we can get this year with the amount of games we have, competitions we are in.
It was certainly a difficult day [on Friday], to name the team. It certainly wasn't easy. They weren't easy decisions to make, but were ones I had to make. You just hope the team performs and you get the benefit of that.
I have to compliment the players on the fitness levels, I thought we looked really strong, stronger at the end and that's testament to what they've given during the summer."
