NGCP issues red, yellow alerts for Visayas grid

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued red and yellow alerts for the Visayas grid on Monday, August 24, as electricity demand is expected to be high while major power plants continue to be unavailable.

In its 8 a.m. advisory, the transmission firm said that the red alert will be between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. while the yellow alert will be between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach 2,395 megawatts (MW) while available capacity is only 2,312 MW.

The NGCP said that 28 plants are on forced outage, while 13 others are running on derated capacities, for a total of 896.3 MW unavailable to the grid.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert status means the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
