NGCP issues yellow alert for Visayas

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has issued a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on Monday, June 22 as major coal power plants remain unavailable while electricity demand is expected to be high.

In its 8 a.m. advisory, the transmission firm said that the yellow alert will be between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. as peak demand is estimated to reach up to around 2,427 megawatts (MW), while available supply is only at 2,593 MW.

NGCP said that 25 plants are on forced outage, while 15 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 944 MW unavailable to the grid.

Major coal plants that are offline are Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 (150 MW).

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not often lead to power interruptions.
