MANILA, Philippines —The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on Friday as major coal power plants continued to be offline even amid high power demand.
In its 8 a.m. advisory, the yellow alert will be between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. with peak demand estimated to reach 2,405 megawatts (MW) against a 2,523 MW supply.
NGCP said that 30 plants were on forced outage and 16 running on derated capacities for a total of 1,001.5 MW unavailable to the grid.
The major Visayas coal plants that are offline are still Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 (150 MW).
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but which does not often lead to power interruptions.
