MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued a a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on Tuesday, June 23 as major coal power plants continue to be unavailable while electricity demand remains high.
In its 8 a.m. advisory, the transmission firm said that the yellow alert will be between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach around 2,424 megawatts (MW), while available supply is only at 2,579 MW.
The NGCP said that 25 plants were on forced outage while 17 others are running on derated capacities, for a total of 953.9 MW unavailable to the grid.
The major Visayas coal plants that are still offline are Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), and Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 (150 MW).
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not often lead to power interruptions.
