SHAH ALAM – Former Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has confirmed that he was one of two individuals detained by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) in an incident in Petaling Jaya on Thursday.
The Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) leader explained that he and his colleagues had initially held a discussion at a studio in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, before deciding to continue with the discussion in Petaling Jaya to review some materials related to the project being discussed.
“When Jais officers arrived, only the woman and I were there. I admit that this was a mistake.
“As I also explained to the Jais officers, we did not engage in any indecent acts that could raise suspicion,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
Earlier, Jais director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad confirmed that two individuals had been detained to assist investigations into a khalwat (close proximity) case involving a public figure in the Petaling district on Wednesday.
He said the arrests were made at about 6pm.
Nik Nazmi said he did not wish to prolong the matter and would cooperate with any legal proceedings.
“I would like to apologise to my wife, our families and everyone affected by this mistake in judgement. The incident should not have happened.
“I also apologise to Bersama for disappointing its members and supporters, as this issue has affected the party. I will accept whatever decision the party makes.
“I hope all parties will respect the legal process and refrain from prolonging the case through the media,” he said.
