JOHOR BAHRU - Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi assured that the BN-led Johor government under Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi would continue to work in line with the federal government if it retains power in the state election.

Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister and Umno president, said BN's role in the unity government means there will be no conflict between the Johor state administration and Putrajaya.

"Remember, BN is also part of the unity government. The Johor government may be led by BN, but BN is part of the unity government.

"Do not worry. As BN Johor chairman, Datuk Onn Hafiz and I as BN Malaysia chairman, I will ensure the Johor government remains aligned with the unity government in Putrajaya," he said.

He was speaking at a community engagement programme in Kota Iskandar here on Wednesday.

Zahid also dismissed speculation that BN could become an opposition party, saying the coalition would respect decisions made by the party leadership at both Umno and BN levels.

"What would happen if BN becomes the opposition? We are not going to oppose (the government)," he said, adding that BN only spent twenty-two months as the opposition before returning to government.

On the selection of BN candidates for the Johor state election, Zahid said priority was given to individuals who were hardworking and had strong chances of winning.

He said although some expected BN to win 40 seats or fewer, the coalition remained confident it could form the next state government.
