Deepavali, or Diwali, is the festival of light’s triumph over darkness, which, as far as holidays go, is an excellent reason to celebrate. Wherever you’re doing that celebrating, be it in Singapore, India, or even further afield, the day has the same shape. Doors open, relatives arrive, lamps are lit to mark the occasion. New outfits are meticulously styled, the scents of the season fill the air, and more food than any reasonable gathering could finish is shared over quality time with loved ones. It can be loud, warm, dressed up in the best way, and run almost entirely on sugar and affection. The clothes get planned, the sweets get ordered, the hair gets done. But for a day with so much light, colour, and built on so much effort, will your usual clean girl office musk really cut it?

If the answer is no, Deepavali conveniently comes with its own scent world, and it’s a beautiful one. Jasmine and marigold from garlands and flower sellers, sandalwood from puja, the richness of incense in the air, saffron and cardamom from the kitchen, milk and sugar from the sweets, the warm wood of a house that’s been full of your favourite people since the sun came up. The perfumes below each pick up a different thread of that world: some for the family home, some for celebrating out, one for the quiet hour at the end, and all of them for smelling like you not only dressed for the occasion, but you really thought about showing up and celebrating in style.

Garlands & Golden Light: Madurai by Memo Paris

Madurai is the temple city of Tamil Nadu, and Memo Paris named this fragrance after the painted towers of the Meenakshi Temple and the flower market that spills out around them. Jasmine sambac sits at the heart alongside tagete, or marigold, invoking the feeling of flower garlands, with tuberose and a flash of turmeric bringing the colour in behind it. The florals don’t shout or screech, and the sandalwood and soft suede base pulls everything down to skin, so you get less of a literal garland and more the memory of having carried one. On a humid day it stays close and creamy rather than blooming outward. Wear it for walking into the house you grew up in and smelling like you belong, or to the one you married into if you want to take a little piece of your past with you to add to new memories.

Smoke & Warmth: Encens Suave by Matière Première

Matière Première means raw material, and perfumer Aurélien Guichard builds each fragrance around a single natural ingredient at the highest dose it can carry while still smelling wearable. Here that ingredient is incense resin, akin to the sweet smoke that drifts from the lighting of the first lamp. On skin, it’s not what you’d expect from typical dry incense. Labdanum, benzoin, coffee, and Madagascan vanilla wrap the resin in something warm, fuzzy, and faintly edible, so it reads as the moment the smoke reaches the kitchen as the first sweets are served. It lasts for hours but projects gently. Wear it if your typical spritz is less floral and feminine, but you still want to envelope your day in something intentional, grounded, and more fitting for the occasion. Great for both men and women.

Petals & Polish: Hibiscus Mahajád by Maison Crivelli

Hibiscus Mahajád is a more conceptual choice than a specific moment of Deepavali, but one that still makes sense. Hibiscus and rose bring a lush, rosy brightness that feels like stepping into a house already full of flowers, colour and conversation. Underneath, vanilla adds the kind of warmth that makes you want to stay for one more sweet, and a soft leather and musk base keeps it polished rather than sugary. It carries easily from morning visits through to a dressed-up evening, so it suits anyone who wants one fragrance to see them through every stop on the day’s itinerary. Choose it if your outfit leans towards rich jewel tones and gold, or if you love a floral with a little more depth than usual. It’s an almost-guaranteed compliment getter.

Spice & Sophistication: Black Saffron by Byredo

Saffron is one of the most sacred colours in India, and Byredo founder Ben Gorham has said it was part of his Indian upbringing in smell, taste and colour long before he launched a fragrance brand. Black Saffron is the pick for anyone who wants to honour the festival in a contemporary, more modern register. Bright pomelo and juniper keep the opening fresh, while violet and rose soften the heart, and a touch of raspberry over leather and blonde woods gives it a sleek, understated edge. The saffron runs through it as a thread of warmth inside something cool, clean, and a little mysterious, so it comes into its own as the evening takes over. Think a late dinner with cousins, a stroll under the stars with your other half, or the after-party once the family visits wind down. Choose it if your wardrobe leans minimal and monochrome, or if you prefer your presence acknowledged rather than announced. Consider it the black tie of the festive edit.

Silk & Sugar: Soie Malaquais by Dries Van Noten

For anyone whose favourite part of Deepavali arrives on a dessert plate, Soie Malaquais is the obvious choice. A bright opening of bergamot and blackcurrant gives way to soft rose, before chestnut, cocoa and vanilla settle in with a warmth that recalls gulab jamun, still glistening in its rose-scented syrup. It smells indulgent without tipping into sticky, so it works as well on a quiet morning with family as it does at a crowded open house later in the day. Its smooth, almost tactile softness also suits a silk sari or kurta, which makes it a natural match for anyone dressing up for the occasion. Reach for it if you love a gourmand but want more elegance than a plain sweet scent can offer, and if you want your aunties to think you really know how to be a modern woman who considers her personal style as much as she considers tradition.

Steeped & Sentimental: Chai Addiction by Rahasya

Not every Deepavali memory happens at the altar or around the dinner table. Some of the most treasured belong to the quieter moments in between, when the visits slow down and the smell of chai simmering on the stove calls everyone back to more personal moments. Chai Addiction, from Singapore’s own Rahasya, is made for anyone who finds the comfort of the festival in exactly those conversations. Cardamom and ginger give it a gentle warmth, softened by a creamy milk accord and vanilla, while sandalwood and suede wrap the whole thing in your favourite scarf as you sip away the stresses of being asked when you’re going to get married. It’s cosy enough for a long afternoon catching up with family en masse, intimate enough for a singular visit with your grandparents, and refined enough to carry you through to an evening open house without having to respray. Choose it if your idea of luxury is time with the people you love most, and you’d rather be remembered for personal connection than for being the life of the party. Some heirlooms are poured, not worn.

Make Deepavali Yours

Deepavali is a festival designed for celebration but built on detail. The kolam drawn at dawn, the lamps placed just so along the doorway, and the new clothes shopped and styled for this one morning of the year all say something about the people behind them. Fragrance belongs in that same conversation. Whether you’re drawn to the jasmine of the flower stalls, the glow of saffron, the quiet smoke of incense, or the comfort of chai and sweets shared with family, there is a scent here for every version of your day. Choose one to carry you from the first visit to the last plate, or match a different fragrance to each moment as the celebrations unfold. However you mark the occasion, let the perfume you choose be as considered as everything else you bring to it. Light is what Deepavali celebrates, and the right fragrance lets you carry a little of it with you.
