Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid breaks down on air, admitting to an affair just days after his Olympic bronze medal victory.
THE triumph of winning an Olympic bronze medal turned into a public confession for Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid.
In a tearful live television interview following his third-place finish in the men’s 20km individual event, the 28-year-old admitted he had been unfaithful to his partner.
“There is someone who, perhaps, isn’t in front of the screen today,” Laegreid told Norwegian broadcaster NRK. “Six months ago, I met the love of my life, the most beautiful and best person in the world. And three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life and I was unfaithful to her.”
Laegreid, a relay gold medallist from the Beijing 2022 Games, said he had confessed to his partner a week prior. He described the period as “the worst weeks of my life,” adding that sport had “taken a back seat in recent days.”
The athlete expressed regret over his decision to share the personal news during the broadcast. He later admitted the live confession might have been selfish and hoped it did not ruin the day for his compatriot Johan-Olav Botn, who won the gold medal.
French biathlete Eric Perrot took the silver in the event.
