Day four of the Paris 2024 Olympics is another jam-packed schedule with medals up for grabs in gymnastics, fencing, judo, rugby, shooting, surfing, swimming and table tennis.
American superstar Simone Biles led her team to Olympic gold in the women’s gymnastics final while Team GB gymnasts Becky Downie, Alice Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Ruby Evans and Abi Martin agonisingly fell short of a place on the podium.
Nathan Hales won Team GB’s third gold medal of the Olympics with a stunning performance in the men’s trap shooting. In a thrilling fight for gold, Hales beat China’s Qi Ying to achieve a new Olympic record in the event missing just two of the 50 shots in the final.
Still to come in the pool, Britain’s men will try to claim 4x200m freestyle relay gold – a race they won in Tokyo. Duncan Scott, Matt Richards, James Guy and Tom Dean are out to defend their title.
Earlier, the men’s triathlon was postponed at the last minute due to polluted water in the Seine River, with tests revealing water quality levels that were “still above the acceptable limits” for Tuesday’s race to go ahead on time and leaving athletes facing uncertainy.

The reigning Olympic champion in this event Zac Stubblety-Cook takes part in this first semi-final. He hangs back slightly over the opening lap but there’s not much separating all the swimmers.
He’s fourth after the first 100m and is a second quicker than this morning’s heats. Corbeau from the Netherlands turns for home in first place but here comes the champion.
Stubblety-Cook gets the win with a time of 2:08.57.

Daniel Wiffen spoke to BBC TV after winning gold for Team Ireland in the men’s 800m freestyle. He said: “I was writing, ‘I’m going into the history books.’ And that’s exactly what I have done.
“It definitely was [a perfect race] in the way I wanted to execute it. It wasn’t the time that I wanted but you know Olympic finals aren’t about getting the time, it is about getting your hand on the wall first.
“I haven’t seen Andy [his coach], he is somewhere in the building. I’ve got no idea but I’m sure I will see him on that top podium later on.
“I actually heard Nathan [his twin brother] when I was walking out and I thought ‘I can’t believe you have shouted that.’ He was the only person I could hear in the crowd which is pretty ironic, my twin is all I hear.”

Anna Hopkin won’t be in the final.

Anna Hopkin sits in third at the turn in her semi-final race but she’s slowing down over the final 50m and finishes sixth in the race. It’ll be a tough ask for her to get through now.
Siobhan Bernadette Haughey set the pace with a fine 52.64 secs with Hopkin one second further behind at 53.74. She’ll need the second semi-final to swim slower in order to make it through.
Olympics 2024: Biles wins Olympic gold with a little help as USA dominate team final
20:32
Mike Jones
The all-around team final is a wild circus of a night with flips and spins and falls in all directions, and you need four eyes to watch. But at 8.20pm there was only one routine left to perform, and the room belonged to Simone Biles.
She performed with spring and extraordinary height, the highlight of which was a triple twisting double-back somersault which is hard enough to write, let alone deliver in an Olympic final. The routine contained some flaws on landing but it is a measure of her otherworldly skill that her score of 14.666 was still the best all night by a distance. She sealed gold with a kiss and the Bercy Arena erupted.

Olympics 2024: Swimming - Men’s 800m freestyle - Wiffin wins gold for Ireland!
20:20
Jack Rathborn
Goodness me, what a swim, he found something within 20m of the wall, Wiffin lifts himself up, he’s done it. He gestures, putting the phone down and sinks into the water.
Wiffin makes history for Northern Ireland, a first gold in 36 years, he takes an Olympics record for good measure, coming home in 7:38.19!
Bobby Finke won silver for the USA and Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri has a bronze.

Daniel Wiffen bids to make history for Ireland, can he snap a 36-year wait for an athlete from Northern Ireland to win an Olympic gold medal.
The 23-year-old is off to a fine start, and he’s pipped Winnington, of the USA, at the half-way point.
But Finke is right there, as is Paltrinieri, who has pushed on too. This could be a razor-tight finish. That trio now pulling clear.
It’s Wiffin, Finke and Paltrinieri, all within a few tenths of a second as we approach the final 100m. The noise rises, the distance allows for the tension to rise, and we’ve got two lengths left.
The Italian leads by 0.78, to Wiffin... Can the Northern Irishman pull this back?
They’re so close to each other, most here are on their feet, 50m to go, three men, barely separated, 20m to go, it’s going to be Wiffin!

That was sensational, Kaylee McKeown has done it, in 57.33, a new Olympic record!
The Aussie goes back-to-back, edging out USA duo Smith and Berkoff, for silver and bronze. And don’t the Aussies love it, including Lleyton Hewitt and Alex De Minaur in the crowd.
Smooth, crisp strokes, it was a close race until the turn and then she powered clear, next up is the men’s 800m freestyle.

An icon! Leon Marchand with another stunning swim, he wins the first semi-final, 1min 53.40secs, beating out Canada's Ilya Kharun and Estonia's Kregor Zirk - who lands a national record.
But what noise, the hosts are glued to Marchand and every time he enters the pool, the pressure is immense.
Off Marchand dashes, to the pool to cool down, he’ll need to flush out lactic acid from his body ahead of that daunting double - he’s back for the men’s 200m breaststroke later on, due to start at 8:59pm BST.

“It was the most nervous I have been [ahead of her balance beam performance] I kept my cool and yes I missed my first connection, but the rest of it I couldn’t do much more. “

The second semi-final is won by Pan, what a response to a sluggish heat! Chinese fans screech in delight above the media tribune, their man is fastest in the semi-finals. Popovici second and Jack Alexy third, in what was a quicker race. Five men under 48secs.

Team USA took their foot off the gas towards the end of that final and still dominated.
They scored exactly one point less than they did in qualification where they’re allowed to have four gymnasts compete and then drop the lowest score.
The difficulty of their routines is so high other teams have to hope they wipe out multiple times to have a realistic chance of keeping up with them.
Jordan Chiles fell as she started her balance beam routine and that was the lowest score the USA posted – a 12.733. Only two others Suni Lee’s and Chiles’ floor routines scored less than 14.
That is crazy.

Oh no! Alice Kinsella needed to score a huge 13.834 with her balance beam routine. She nails it to be honest, it’s one of the hardest apparatus and her score ends up at 13.600.
Team GB slip out of the medal places.
Simone Biles’ floor routine is a huge 14.666! Team USA win the gold!

So, for the gold. Here comes Simone Biles on the floor.
She’s free, she’s loose, she’s having fun. It’s a high tempo start with plenty of backflips that Biles lands well.
But, she slips out of the area on her third run and that’ll be a deduction. The difficulty is so high but she won’t care. The routine had a few errors but nothing to hurt Team USA’s chances of winning gold.
Those tumbles were insane. A great way to finish.

Canada, Japan and China have all finished their rotatations with none of the countries able to get ahead of Brazil. Romania are probably too far back to medal with Italy challenging for a silver and Team GB for bronze.
Team USA will ride off into the sunset and finish things off with Simone Biles’ floor routine that should guarantee them the gold.

Brazil have finished their rotations with a final score of 164.497. Team GB are up against it and will need an insane score from Alice Kinsella on the beam to clinch bronze.

Over to the floor again and Team USA’s Jordan Chiles is up. She looks super focused and for good reason. A great performance from the American sees her shake off the error from the balance beam and she gets the crowd going once again.
Becky Downie’s balance beam score is 12.933 after a 4.800 difficulty. This women’s team final is going to come down to the wire.

Becky Downie nailed her uneven bars routine and needs to perform on the balance beam. Her mount is good and cartwheel flick is secure.
Team GB seem to be playing it safe on the beam and there’s a wobble from Downie which she manages to hold. A side somersault is good before a cartwheel with a one-and-a-half twist dismount lands strongly.
Two routines down. Downie should get a pretty good score for that even if the difficutly wasn’t too high.

Elsewhere, Canada’s first effort on the uneven bars posted 13.500 with Brazil scoring 13.366 on vault. Has Georgia-Mae Fenton beaten those scores? Yes! It’s a 13.566.
Alice Kinsella and Becky Downie to come for Team GB.
Meanwhile, Suni Lee is up on the floor for Team USA, smiling away and having a great time. Her enthusiasm is matched by a superb routine and a loud roar from the American fans.

Here’s Georgia-Mae Fenton. She starts off well but wobbles after a double spin. A cartwheel becomes a flick as she finds her rhythm.
There are a few nerves but a solid triple wolf turn keeps her on track. Can she dismount?
It’s a double back somersault and she sticks the landing! Decent.

China and Brazil are finishing their rotations on the vault which has been a high scoring apparatus for both nations. Team GB are on the balance beam, their lowest scoring apparatus.

One more rotation to come, USA have a lead of almost five points but Team GB are into third place!
However, they’ve got the balance beam to come which has caused serious problems tonight. Here’s the standings with one rotation to go:

There’s no time to breathe in this rotation as Simone Biles leaps up onto the beam kicking off with a triple wolf turn. There’s a small wobble from the American great but nothing major.

Suni Lee’s score on the beam was a massive 14.600.
Over on the uneven bars, Team GB’s Becky Downie is up. She’s an expert on this apparatus and will need to perform well to give Britain a chance at a medal.

I don’t think there’s been a bigger smile than Suni Lee’s right now. Following Jordan Chiles’ balance beam routine, Lee steps up and produces the best routine of the day.
At least from what I’ve seen. Quick, skillful and perfectly poised, Lee puts Team USA back in control of this final with Simone Biles still to come.

Steady composure may be Team GB’s way to a medal here. They’re up on the uneven bars and Alice Kinsella starts off with a solid 13.300.
If the gymnasts can avoid any mistakes here and on the balance beam they may be in with a chance. That’s a big ask though.

The balance beam continues to take victims. Jordan Chiles, one of Team USA’s stars, hops onto it and immediately falls off!
Well, not immediately but she wasn’t performing any difficult moves and just slipped. That’ll be a one point deduction which brings the final alive again for those hoping to contest the gold.
Chiles scores a 12.733. Big mistake but it shouldn’t cost the USA much, they’ve got points in the bank after the first two apparatus.

It’s very evident when Simone Biles is up. The crowd just goes wild. The uneven bars are one of her weakest events. Yet, she’s so quick and full of power.

The Independent’s Lawrence Ostlere reporting from the Bercy Arena:
“These are still early days here at the Bercy Arena, but already the US team look in the mood to dominate. They are top of the pile after the first rotation, after Simone Biles and Jade Carey both put down big scores on the vault.
“This arena fell totally silent as Biles paused at the top of the runway ready to perform, and she set off the loudest cheer of the night so far when she made it stick.
“A largely American crowd chanted “USA!” as she walked around the arena to their next apparatus, the uneven bars.”

For the six-time World all-around champion and Olympic gold medalist, who is set to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics after her shocking withdrawal from the 2020 Tokyo games, this sentiment rings truer now than ever before.
Feelings of doubt and depression left the 27-year-old, often recognized as the “greatest athlete of all time,” in and out of the gym for a year and a half before her comeback at this year’s Olympics was confirmed. The Glaswegian lost his place as a full-time hockey player on the GB programme in 2019 and was a few clicks on a job portal away from quitting the sport altogether.
Thanks to an olive branch from head coach Paul Revington, a willingness to evolve his game and a whole heap of natural ability, Morton is now the toast of Team GB having struck a stunning brace in the final five minutes to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw with Netherlands.

Jack Draper crashed out of the men’s singles tennis earlier today by losing 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 to Taylor Fritz and the Brit wasn’t happy about the conditions at Roland Garros.
The temperature of the water and having to fill his own bottle were among the complaints in the sweltering Parisian heat.
“It was tough conditions, there’s no doubt about it,” said Draper as he dripped with sweat. “I need to play more in this sort of heat, and obviously, going to America, I’ll get more used to that. It was really hot out there today.
“We were both trying our best to put out some good tennis. Part of it’s physicality but I said to the referee, it’s pretty poor that the players have to drink hot water when we’re playing in those conditions.
“It’s important we have good fridges to keep our water cool. It’s so tough to recover when you’re just not replenishing properly.
“There’s no escape from the heat, even at the change of ends. I haven’t played in much hotter conditions than that. Your body starts to really fight against you.
“We shouldn’t have to fill our water up every change of ends, we need to sit down. It’s not good enough. I just think it’s pretty poor that they put the players through that on court.”

Great Britain’s Nathan Hales has set a new Olympic record after winning gold in the men’s trap final.
“So many emotions; I’m very emotional as you can probably see,” Hales said after hitting 48 targets out of a possible 50. “It’s just an amazing result. There’s going to be a big celebration.
“The final was great and I'm so happy to get an Olympic record as well as winning the Olympics. I just try and keep everything as we always do and treat it exactly the same way I treat finals in training. I just push through and keep focused on what I'm doing, not on what other a
