MANILA, Philippines — Davao City 2nd District Rep. Omar Duterte described the arrest warrant issued against Vice President Sara Duterte as a “clear act of political harassment,” accusing the government of using its power to silence people.
“My heart breaks to see what is happening to our country today. The recent issuance of a warrant of arrest against Vice President Sara Z. Duterte is a clear act of political harassment,” Omar said in a statement Saturday.
He said the government’s power was being used “to break down and silence people instead of helping them,” drawing parallels between the treatment of Sara and that of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
“We have seen this kind of treatment before. They did this to PRRD, to Father Digong. They used their power and authority to destroy and oppress him. And now, we are seeing the same oppression being done to our Second President,” he said.
Omar urged Filipinos to pay attention to the actions of the current administration, saying the issue was no longer limited to his sister.
“This is no longer just about Vice President Sara Duterte. This is about our dignity as a nation and the safety of every single family in our country,” Omar said.
Duterte posted P360,000 bail Saturday for three counts of grave threats after the Quezon City Regional Trial Court issued a warrant for her arrest.
